Standing 9.5-10 inches tall and weighing 13-14 pounds, the Cairn is truly a big dog in a small package. They are often called the "best little pal in the world". Cairns seem to have an inborn affinity for children. They are physically very tough, and forgive or overlook mishaps and stepped-on feet with characteristic generosity of spirit. The coat comes in any color except for white, including red, brindle, blackish, sand and various shades of grey, often with dark ears, muzzle and tail tip. The final coat color is hard to predict as it changes many times for several years. Intelligent dogs, there is very little the Cairn can't learn if the owner takes the time to teach him or her.
