Ouno Design, formed in 2002 by Sarah Gee and Lindsay Brown, is in part a response to the hand-made revolution in modern design. Both designers were committed early on to producing beautiful objects that were both environmentally sensitive and creatively exciting. Both have art, design and literary backgrounds, and both wanted to combine their love of modernism with older traditions of handcrafting. The design studio is based in Strathcona, Vancouver's oldest neighborhood located near its famous Chinatown.
Ouno Design's one-of-a-kind and limited-edition pillows are made solely from vintage collectible textiles such as bark cloth, linen and heavy cotton weaves. Ouno is immersed in the tradition of Westcoast Modernism, incorporating the warmer components of modern design such as fire, wood, and strong simple textures. The company also draws from Scandinavian and Japanese design among other sources, and emphasizes the classical Japanese concept of "wabi-sabi" which honors simplicity, naturalism and the beauty of happenstance. Ouno operates on the philosophy that pillows are the key to a room's comfort and decor, and that paradoxically the more ancient the design, the more current the look. |
